Are universities equipping Gen Z with the skills employers need?
Juanita, a maths graduate who recently secured a role in Finance and Tech at Waterstons, with Glen, Global Head of Emerging Talent at HSBC came together and got talking about where the student journey falls victim to gaps in skill building and how can employers play a part in fixing this.
Juanita notes that while universities provide good networking opportunities, she often had to seek career information herself, turning to resources like Bright Network. She shares how mentorship programs were crucial for her development, though these opportunities were limited.
Glen explains that while universities provide a solid foundation, there’s a need for more collaboration between employers and academic institutions to ensure students acquire essential skills. He points out that the pandemic has created gaps in social capital, as students missed face-to-face interactions that build essential workplace skills.
